What is a police protection district?

A police protection district gives an area special status, allowing its residents to contract with law enforcement to obtain additional police services. The Fig Garden Police Protection District (FGPPD) was founded in 1950 and is one of only three police protection districts left in California; no new districts are allowed in California.

FGPPD is an area bordered by Palm, Maroa, Lansing, and Shaw, encompassing 700+ residences. By contracting dedicated law enforcement personnel to patrol the area, Old Fig residents can expect an average response time of 2 minutes to their homes, compared to an average of 20 minutes for the rest of Fresno County.

These contracts with law enforcement are paid for with funds obtained from a property assessment issued to the district property owners. The FGPPD Board members decide how the funds are allocated.
